Baker Beach Public Bathing Complex Studio 100A
San Francisco, CA
An old WWII battery on Baker Beach in San Francisco presented a unique site that necessitated communication between the new bathing program to be incorporated and that of the existing bunker. When visiting the site, I was struck by the distinct ranges of vision allowed from within in each turret and noticed the potential for new views to be framed of several key vistas around the site. Large fins inserted into the beach and intersected with the battery serve to reprogram the views of the battery out to new locations on the beach that correspond to these vistas and limit the view available from any one pool of the complex, producing a unique mood for the space of each pool. Varying water temperatures (cold to hot) from pool to pool emphasize the differences between each space and allow for a progression of experience as the bather moves through the site.
