Illusory Objects

Over the course of a semester in a digital modeling class, this project evolved from a study of optical illusions to creating an enchanted office. The class was dedicated to teaching an introduction to working in a 3D modeling environment (Autodesk Maya) covering everything from design, creation, texturing, lighting, and rendering.

Project 1 of the semester revolved around creating 5 individual items. For this, I chose to create three-dimensional representations of two-dimensional optical illusions, viewable from a specific angle within the composition. The objects are textured with basic colors to distinguish from one another and suspended in space with ambient lighting; they all use different materials to serve as a reference for how they are rendered. The focus of Project 1 was to cover the basics of constructing the models themselves and familiarize myself with the 3D work environment.
Project 2 expanded on Project 1 by placing the objects within a room, adding more items, and begin applying and manipulating custom textures while also introducing individual lights within the scene. The underlying idea here was to create a space where a player would move through in a video game.
Project 3 took off quite a bit from the first two assignments. Instead of focusing on the objects themselves, they are now situated in a space where they belong and are more innocuous. I switched to using Arnold Textures/Rendering, which allowed me to create a more naturalistic composition. I toyed with the idea of this being a basic setting for a recursive puzzle game, where a player interacts with the objects to continue to the next stage, which I may pick up in the future to further conceptualize/implement.
