Credentialism

Credentialism is the belief that “qualifying into a good school” is the only path in life. Under such mindset, the focus of middle school students (even elementary school students) is limited to academic preparation while other aspects, such as personality development (like physical education and art), self-exploration, teamwork abilities, and creativity are all looked over. In Asian countries and regions, credentialist competition is fairly fierce; in order to stand out, many students devote the larger part of their extracurricular time toward after-school academic programs.

Although I successfully got in to the college of my dreams and made it through graduation, I felt lost about the future, which inspired me to reflect on the irrationality of credentialism. With that in mind, I retrieved my high school journals and utilized portrait photography to reinterpret this suppressed and captive life lived by students under this institution.
