Alice in Wonderland | Book Cover & Dust Jacket Redesign

I’ve always loved Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll for its eloquent and poignant storylines and eccentric adaptations. Since the classic’s 1865 release, its book cover has seen various interpretations and interesting perspectives on its whimsical yet meaningful story. I formed my own modernized interpretation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland into a book cover and dust jacket redesign.
Explorations

My explorations focused on the dark and spooky undertones of the story as well as its curious and playful aspect. Because many of the existing book covers carry much detail and literal meaning, I aimed to adopt more symbolism and minimalism.
Final Design

One challenge of this task was keeping the redesign simple, due to the story’s vast amount of characters and settings. Following multiple iterations, I decided to symbolize the story’s several themes through contrasting colors. I also needed to focus on developing a clear and cohesive hierarchy, along with providing enough contrast for user readability.

After finalizing my book cover, I extended its concept to the components of a full dust jacket (spine, inside flaps, and back cover). I continued the playing card color scheme of red, black, and white to carry the same theme throughout the entire redesign.
