Gigposter Design - Introspection

This gig poster was one I did for myself. I designed this poster after some of my favorite styles of music, especially alternative/soft rock. I wanted to design something that could be useful for a band that focuses their music on helping people feel like it's okay to be unique and different and to stand out in the world. Even if the world is doing something one way, you can be yourself and that's okay. This music is usually fun and a feel good type of music. My objective was to create a gig poster that gets this idea across to the audience. To meet this objective, the gig poster had to have a creative design, repeating elements, and be professional.

These were a set of sketches that I made as I was brainstorming how I wanted my design to look:

At first I was thinking about focusing on an "out of this world" idea to meet my objectives. Most of my sketches involved space or the moon. I tried to include different varieties to help me brainstorm. I added these octopus images later on for a different take on the concept.

I decided to go the octopus route. This is my first draft:

After studying this draft and receiving feedback from others, I decided to change the way my octopus looked. It didn't look realistic enough and it seemed pretty flat on the page when in reality, and octopus wouldn't really be sitting in the position it was. It was also lacking a lot of detail to help give it a 3D look.

This was my next draft after incorporating those things:
With those edits, it gave my picture more composition and a more interesting design but it was still missing something. As I thought about it, I realized that I was lacking the real message behind the gig poster, which is what led to my final gig poster design. I still wanted to incorporate the octopus, but I needed more of a story that people could relate to when they were listening to the style of music of the band I was portraying. This is my final gig poster design after all the changes:

Overall, the design that I ended with meets the objectives that I set.

1. Creative - The gig poster portrays an idea and message in a unique and fun way.
2. There are repeated design elements including consistent textures in the road, crosswalk, and Band title. I also made sure the font helped create consistency with the umbrellas by incorporating the pointy elements on the sides.
3. To help bring professionalism, the gig poster uses many design elements such as consistency, complimentary colors, and alignment, and contrast.
