OceanWave
A Senior-Child Mentor Center
OceanWave was completed as part of the final design project for the Interior Design Studio IV curriculum at Philadelphia University. It was a collaborative effort of Jayden Adamski, Rosario Escheveria and myself. The final project, model, and presentation was completed by all three of us equally. The concept for OceanWave came from the inherent nature of an ocean wave, as the name implies, one that is continually giving and taking, a mutual relationship with it's surroundings, much like the learning and experience within the facility.
Oceanwave is an experiential meeting point for senior citizens and children from the ages of 5 to 13. The project aims to provide a safe and comfortable space with an emphasis on the interconnectedness and freedom of the interactions that occur within the space. Utilizing a softer palette of light blue, gray, and yellow hues allow light to infiltrate the space more effectively and encourage freer thought. Below are the existing building plan and elevations of the space.
Below is the completed plans for OceanWave. Fluidity throughout the space, while still maintaining ADA accessibility, a prominent issue for senior citizens. OceanWave holds numerous rooms for interaction, as well as administrative functions, and public outdoor areas. With a kitchen, greenhouse, library, flex room, and fabrication room, the center is all encompassing, providing countless possibilities for interaction and learning for both the children and senior mentors. With an exterior garden and accompanying seating, Spring, Summer, and Fall activities can take place, with structured workshops held periodically in the flex space which has 4 large frameless glazing panels offering views t both the garden and exterior sidewalk so mentors or mentees can see their counterparts before even entering the building.
Longitudinal Section (On the left is the entry sequence, and all the way to the right is a small library)
Transverse Section (Utilizing the greenhouse as a secondary vestibule, the fabrication/ craft room serves a greater purpose than small activities, and can encourage and contribute to long-term mental health and growth. Mentors and mentees alike are able to plant and periodically tend to a plant, a crucial component to growth and development.)
Clockwise from Top. Staggered seating providing multiple angles and levels for viewing presentations or videos on the large projection screen. A detail of the projection wall, with both cabinetry and a screen. A detailed floor plan outlining ceiling elements for improved acoustic performance.
Clockwise from Top: A more intimate and enclosed seating arrangement allows for group work but keep noise levels to a minimum. A section of the aforementioned group seating. A detailed plan of the same seating arrangement showing the continuous flooring throughout the southern spaces.
A detailed elevation of the fabrication / craft room with shelf space and both small and large storage cabinetry.
A detailed elevation of the kitchen appliances available at OceanWave.
The completed exterior elevation that visitors will encounter as they enter OceanWave.
An axonometric view of the Rhinoceros 3D model, as required by the deliverables for the project.
The final completed physical model, emphasizing the curvature and light throughout the center.
This 1st perspective shows a common scene one would encounter when entering OceanWave. Before this is a vestibule where guests are able to enter a personalized PIN code for safety to the individuals inside.
This 2nd perspective shows the small library space accessible to all users, with a mural wrap adhered and changed monthly to add variety and playfulness to the space.
The 3rd perspective is of the conference room, reserved for administration of the center, and programming of the curriculum that will lead the activities for the mentors and mentees. Utilizing an open space with cove lighting and large windows with variety of tints to continue the color scheme within.
