Mookie Betts Records First Cycle of 2018 MLB Season

Now living in Sudbury, Massachusetts, Michael Koenig is a graduate of Hobart College in Geneva, New York. In his leisure time, Sudbury’s Michael Koenig enjoys following Major League Baseball (MLB).

Until August 2018, no player in MLB had recorded a cycle, which is a home run, a triple, a double, and a single in the same game. Mookie Betts of the Boston Red Sox changed that August 9 in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 25-year-old right fielder hit his 27th home run of the season in the ninth inning of an 8-5 loss to become the first player to perform the feat this season and only the second Red Sox player to do so in the past 22 years. A potential American League MVP candidate, Betts led the league in batting average and OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) through August 9.

In addition to the 27 home runs, Betts had 30 doubles and 22 steals in 25 attempts. He also scored 95 runs in 96 games, which is a pace that hasn't been maintained since Rickey Henderson in 1985.
