Printing in Germany: Minimalism vs Maximalism Project

"Printing in Germany" Accordian Fold Pamphlet: Page Layout Project #2
The purpose of this project was to exhibit minimalism and maximalism in the form of an accordion fold pamphlet about the Printing Press in Germany. In the minimalist side, I focused on strong typography, while highlighting text with the limited use of lines. The maximalism side, I honestly don't love, but it was great practice for me in learning more of the tools available in InDesign.

Rationale:

On the minimal side, very thin and minimal lines were used to break up the space, along
with a strong drop cap, to create a focus on the front page. Key words and phrases are
highlighted in red italics. Black and red were used because of their heavy use in vintage
newspapers, which aligns with the printing press story. The font, font size, leading and tracking were chosen with good readability in mind. The varying paragraph alignment was set to create a macro visual balance across the spread that is aesthetically pleasing, while still easily readable.

On the maximalism side, a stark contrasting design was created, although with
cohesiveness in mind. The main font, colours, and lines were adapted in a much more loud style to achieve maximalism, while still allowing it to feel as if it is one unit. Lines and triangles were chosen as these shapes are seen repeatedly in letters and typography. Typography itself was explored through the use of colour in the words “Printing in”, as
