Peace Crane
I vividly remember in 6th grade history learning about World War II and its horrors. One of which I remember most is the story of a girl affected by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. She folded 1000 origami cranes. After doing some research I came across the story of Sadako Sasaki, a victim of the bombings at age 2. As the story goes, she underwent the task of trying to fold 1000 origami cranes while in the hospital in the hopes that the gods would see this as an offering and save her.
Among my favorite quotes in the story being by Sadako:  "I will write peace on your wings, and you will fly all over the world.” Sadako folded 644 cranes before succumbing to the radiation at a mere age 12. Her friends and family completed the rest and had buried the rest with her.
I wanted to honor this story with an idea I had for a typography project using strips of paper to fold into letters. I cut and folded out the Japanese Kanji for peace (as best as I could research) and pasted them on to the wings of a origami crane made of poster board.
