The Consulate General of Germany in New York and the Permanent Mission of Germany’s to the UN gave me the assignment to design an invitation and banner for a joint event celebrating the Day of German Unity as well as “Deutschlandjahr” - a campaign to promote German-American relations throughout the United States.
I created designs with flowers and leaves that represents both countries as well as joining them together: I used the German national flower, Cornflower, and the US’s national flower, Rose. Both Germany and the US have the Oak tree as a national tree, and it felt natural to incorporate its leaves and acorns as a symbol of partnership. The flowers represent Germany as a unified country and the US as its partner. Both flags are represented in the colors used.
