Robotic Teddy Bears to Comfort Sick Kids

Aaron Horowitz is an inventor in Providence, Rhode Island, is infusing life into stuffed animals for sick children through the use of robotics. He has created interactive robotic stuffed animals that can help comfort and sympathize with seriously ill children. When a class project put him in touch with children who had Type 1 diabetes, he noticed that many of the children played doctor with their favorite stuffed animals. This observation sparked the idea for Jerry the Bear, a robot teddy bear that simulates symptoms of Type 1 diabetes — including fluctuating blood sugar, bathroom urgency and feelings of dizziness. It’s designed so kids can better understand their own health and help normalize their own experience. He has since then went on to create a robot duck to help children deal with cancer. I think this is an amazing idea. Not only is it helping sick children, but it is also educating them and could be used for a variety of illnesses. I think this could also be a useful tool for doctors when trying to explain to a newly diagnosed child or adolescent what the symptoms or side effects may be. It is something every sick child should have.
