Galimgim • illustrated cinemagraphs on nostalgia

In exploring what we miss about our pasts, we find the disparity between the simplicity of our childhood and the ubiquity of problems we face on the terrain of reality. Galimgim frames these profound moments in illustrating nostalgia beyond the sentimental longing of delightful memories, being woven in the idea of coming home and yearning for things no longer there.

My sister and I used to watch the local news in the dark, awaiting the announcement of class suspension, already in our uniforms, and ready for school at 5 A.M. Going back to sleep after seeing our city's name on the news was the most satisfying thing in the world.

My aunt and I used to make bubbles out of gumamela flowers, freshly picked from my grandmother's beautiful garden in Tagaytay. The ride felt so long that I believed we weren't in the Philippines anymore. The house's interior hasn't changed ever since.

My family used to hold dinner parties on the roofdeck of our house, complete with a balcony perfect for pabitins for birthday parties. I loved dressing up on my birthday; I became Batman, Spiderman, and even a mad scientist.

My sister and I used to accompany my grandparents to their home province of Bicol during the summer. I'd bring my favorite dark blue Spiderman pillow because the overnight ride would take around ten hours, but it would just feel like an hour or two.
