Effects of the palm oil
industry poster series
One of the leading causes of deforestation is palm oil. In this project, I wanted to have the viewer take a step back and wonder why their choices are effecting the world around us. Since palm oil is used in EVERYTHING; I chose to depict some of the biggest factors. I chose to show the everyday use of health care, selected foods, and who is affected by these choices.
Sketches
Below, are my sketches and ideas I started with. I chose to keep a simple color palette with abstract visuals. Since I had done research previously on my typographic poster and kinetic typography, I used the information before. After digging into more research about what is actually being used with palm oil, I tried to establish those elements in my artwork.
Process
After making two different but very similar designs, I found that my idea of targeting each problem with palm oil was not effective as I thought. I then took a step back to reevaluate my audience and how to share information in as effectively as possible.
Final project
In my final poster series, I stuck to quick questions that grab the reader's eye. With abstract illustrations, I was able to depict some of the leading factors of palm oil. The demand for palm oil is excessively high because of the many products we use today, this all includes: hair care products, detergents, ice cream, butter, chocolate, bread and many more. This is becoming a problem for the species that are losing their habitats (hint: orangutans). I hope that this poster series has given you a better understanding of how the palm oil industry really is affecting us and mother earth.
