Rage of Juno, oil on canvas, 48 x 65 in., 2018.
New work inspired by the Ancient Roman bust of Juno Ludovisi located in Palazzo Altemps in Rome. The bust of Juno Ludovisi (or Hera Ludovisi) was important for figures such as Goethe and Schiller. Goethe even installed a large life size copy of the giant bust in his house in Weimar.
Juno is the chief goddess in Ancient Roman pantheon, being wife of Jupiter, the king of the gods. She figures prominently in Virgil's epic Aeneid, which tells the pre-story of Rome's founding. It is the reading of this great text and visiting Rome that provoked me to incorporate the figure in my work.

Thanks for looking / reading.
