The assignment for the HEMA design contest 2011 was to design something for the category ‘sports and game’ that fits the HEMA product portfolio. The design had to be supported by a full scale model. I decided to design something for ice skating. Ice skating is something typical Dutch and brings along nostalgic feelings, with which HEMA is often identified. When children learn to skate, old chairs are used for support. The result is that the parents mostly come to the ice skate site by car, because they cannot carry it on their bike. But what is more nostalgic Dutch than cycling to a frozen lake with your children to go ice skating? So I designed a product that gives the children the same support as a chair, but can be folded to a convenient size.
