Activity 2: Screenplay Analysis - Inglorious Basterds
How does the action writing indicate Hanz Landa is playing mind games with LaPadite?
Hanz Landa makes himself look polite, specifically the part where he introduces himself and asks for a glass of milk rather than wine. Hanz Landa waits for LaPadite`s permission to sit down and happily does so. This makes it seem like him and LaPadite are on the same level as the other so Hanz Landa is not seen as intimidating. The false sense of security that Hanz Landa is creating for LaPadite is a set up, kind of like a trap and Hanz Landa is dangling the bait in front of LaPadite. When LaPadite tells his daughter to grab him wine, Hanz Landa suddenly grabs onto his daughter and asks for milk instead. He holds onto the daughter`s a little longer than usual making everyone in the room uncomfortable and we are reminded that he is the one in control.
How does the action writing in the screenplay indicate who has control (or a lack thereof)?
It is clear that Hanz Landa is in control of the discussion between LaPadite and himself. Hanz Landa had a habit of asking LaPadite questions that Hanz Landa could easily answer himself but insists on LaPadite to answer. An example of this is when Hanz Landa asks LaPadite if he knows what the people of France calls him, LaPadite has no interest in that kind of stuff but is urged to answer anyways. LaPadite answers with "Jew Hunter" and Hanz Landa is pleased at the answer. Hanz Landa does this to make sure who LaPadite knows the divided line between them. When LaPadite answered, Hanz Landa gives him an explanation on why he is called the Jew Hunter and that is because he always finds them. With LaPadite keeping that in mind, he is starting to wonder if hiding the Jews under his floor is really futile or not.
How does the dialogue communicate information about the character speaking?
In this scene, Hanz Landa shows off his persuasive skills, he knows LaPadite's weakness and that is his family. Hanz Landa mentions his family and is used sort of as a bargaining chip. Hanz Landa makes one last offer before going on his way, he says that his family will no longer be harassed if LaPadite gives a reason as to why searching his house will be unnecessary. Before LaPadite has time to think about the offer, Hanz Landa drops the question about him hiding Jews. Hanz Landa knew the whole time that LaPadite was hiding Jews and could've found them at the very beginning. But instead, Hanz Landa stretches the interrogation longer because he wants LaPadite to admit it himself.
