THE ENCHANTMENTS   --  At The Edge   (Part 1)

The Enchantments, a series of incredible mountain spires surrounding a basin of crystal clear, glacial fed alpine lakes, is considered by many to be the premier backpacking destination in the Pacific northwest.  A permit, a grueling hike and a resolve to spend numerous nights in the alpine wilderness are necessary to fully explore the 20 + mile circuit of fairy tale lakes.  This series (3 parts) only covers my hike to the base of the Enchantments, itself a challenging hike of 4 miles one way with an altitude gain of 2,280 feet.  I ended up at Colchuck Lake, a beautiful turquoise colored lake at the base of two of the tallest peaks in the Enchantments, which created  an "enchanting" scene itself !   Someday I hope to make it into the heart of the Enchantments, but I did not have a permit and I was able to do this hike in a day.
