This is Not a Pipe: Chambers Stove Composting Unit

The Chambers Stand-Alone Stove
The Chambers stand-alone stove was a wildly successful product throughout the early 20th century. The cube-like frame is easy to work with and the design is simple yet modern. Chambers stoves used a thick rock wool insulation to intensify the heat inside the oven, thus the gas could be turned off at an earlier point in the baking process. A series of internal dampers were also closed , which completely sealed the oven from outside air, allowing the food to continue to cook without using energy of any kind. One could say this was earliest EnergyStar-compliant kitchen appliance.

The Chambers Stand-Alone Stove as Composting Unit
The Chambers Stove makes a perfect stand-alone outdoor composting unit once the internal components are fully removed. The metal range cover can be taken off to reveal easy access to dumping in compost ingredients, and then put back on to contain any potential smells and to maximize the heat from the sun. Compost decomposes fastest between 120 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about how hot the interior of a car gets when left in the parking lot, and about how hot I predict the interior of the composting unit to get, if left on a roof terrace. The two doors on the front can be used to access the compost once it's ready to be used in a garden, or to better spread ingredients or distribute worms. The unit itself is about 37 1/4" by 29 1/2" and therefore will fit through an average exterior door for moving purposes. Additionally, the porcelain enamel coating that comes standard on Chambers stoves, actually protects the unit from outdoor weather by slowing the rust process.
