A Design Rescue Mission

The Square One Project is a three year initiative to incubate new thinking on the nation’s response to crime and to promote more effective criminal justice policies and strategies. It was unveiled in September 2018 at the National Press Club.

Square One brings together leading justice researchers, scholars, policymakers, activists and practitioners. The group’s charge is to explore a fundamental question: If we set aside traditional responses to crime and consider whether others might be more effective – if we begin at square one – how would criminal justice policy be different?

I was commissioned to create a graphic identity. The twist was that the leadership team engaged me just weeks before the National Press Club event. They had rejected a submission from another design studio and needed a visual voice in time for the unveiling that better expressed the project’s purposes, that respected the team's no-frills stylistic sensibilities, and that would have legs over the three-year life of the initiative.

I am proud to say these designs and treatments were taken from concept to enthusiastic client approval in 12 days.
