Students Work: Sustainability in Fashion

Student design project 1: Kacey wanted to introduce concept of sustainability to the high end brand Chole as it has a high potential to create a diffusion line which specialises in eco design. Due to the fact that In 2010, Chloe had joined the Sustainable Luxury Working Group (‘SLWG’), which promotes sustainable sourcing best practices in global supply chains. The SLWG developed a set of Animal Sourcing Principles for sourcing of fur, leather and exotic skins. By adopting the SLWG’s Animal Welfare Principles, Chloé was committed to ethical practices in the catching, maintaining, breeding, raising, transportation, handling and slaughter of animals.
As Chole had already adopted the concept of ethcial practices, Kacey thought that sustainable natural materials like bamboo, soy & hemp mix could be used by Chloe for a sustainable diffusion line. Her concept was inspired by flowers and her theme was fragility. It was a ready to wear collection and aimed for female customers aged 25 and 40. They also have a taste for sustainable fashion. Silhouette was kept simple and wearable because the main focus was the concept of eco fashion and organic fabrics used by the brand.
Student design project 2: Kinyee thought that there are lots of waste in the world, particularly in garment production whereas there is a lot of waste and residual value and finally turned into scrap.
Designers should take advantage of all the resources seriously and it is the true meaning of environmental protection. Hence, the new product line made use of left over from the main manufacturing to give them new lives and values on market. It will jump out of boundaries which not mainly practical, but also trendy, young and upcycle issues were well considered. Kinyee used leftover materials like corduroy, nylon, cotton that she found out in a haberdashery of which these materials had been kept for a long while. She chose a British brand named 'From Somewhere' which is famous for reworking on existing materials to create new fashion work. She designed as if she worked for the brand. Target group aged between 16 and 30, and she thought that this finished outfit could act as a good tester on market. If people like it, she can search for more similar materials from other stores so that the concept of eco fashion can be widely spread.
Inspiration from outdoor activities, Kinyee chose a line between sporty and casual so as to fit her ideal customer Timberland. In her opinion, she wanted the Timberland representative in Asia region could collaborate with "From Somewhere" so that cross over design experience and stress of sustainability could well implement. Since the big name Timberland has long renowned for outdoor functional apparels and durable products whereas From Somewhere is good at doing upcycle fashion using existing materials, Kinyee thought they two would bring about beautiful outcome were she to work as a chief designer in the brand to work together with Timberland.
The wrap skirt can be changed to a cape form so as to achieve long lasting and versatility purpose.
Student design project 3: Betty used JC Penny as her target for launching eco fashion. Based on her research JC Penny is a potential corporation to adopt the concept to raise the public concerned. The Matters of Principle commit the Company to: Environment & health. The brand offers not only modern casual apparel with style but also a choice for choosing the right thing with right attitude. Betty's theme was infinity. She thought that design for sustainability should be out of the box. It should contain infinite and versatile function for aparel design. Her muse was Anna Hathaway as her character was a good fit for the new line because she was healthy, daring and has consistently looked for new challenges. Her target customer aged 25 and over and they were intelligent, cheerful and modern just like the muse. From Betty's design, you can see it has lots of possibilities when a customer wears it. It can be a day wear worn by a woman in an office, and then transformed to a party wear on special occasions.
Based on the research Betty had already sorted out her concept generation, target brand, customer profile, fabric materials, make up and styling. The main focus was her designed pieces had multi faceted functions. Like the blouse, you could change the original design if needed. The sleeves could be taken off to fit for particular purpose. It can be swapped for laced sleeves and same as the front and back panels, and you could shorten it or replace it by using laced panels. The collar could be changeable as well. It could be formal when you have it for working in an office. And it could be lace frilled when needed. Besides, the bottom hem of the pants can be turned up to show contrast details and it also has a detachable 'mini decorative girdle' to accessorize the pants. It is up to you on what special occasion you need them for: clubbing or working.
