2D Game Kit - Aztec Adventure

For this assignment we had to reskin the 2D Game Kit made by Unity. After coming up with a few concepts, we eventually chose my concept for an Aztec themed platformer.

I was part of the team Boss Ass Witch which consisted of me, Elke, Enrique and Imke.

I took care of making the UI and building/playtesting the level in Unity.

After making the moodboard for the game and the character I made some quick mock-ups in Photoshop. I wanted to have this silhouette-like style similiar to the game Patapon because I thought it would work well with the Aztec theme.

After comparing our level designs with each other we decided to use this level design made by Imke.
In the beginning me and Imke built the level together in Unity, to have a base to begin with and build upon. In this stage we didn't have working keys, switches and pressure pads.

We remained quite faithful to her original design but we ended up reworking the area near the start and near the third door.

We removed the platforms in the area near the start as they were pointless because the character could jump pretty high or could just skip the platforming bits altogether by walking under it. The area near the third door was a confusing mess so we reworked part of it in a bonus room and made it easier to navigate.
Below is the last screenshot I made of the level with all the assets that we made to replace the ones from the 2D Game Kit.

As you can see it changed quite a bit, but the base is still there. I ended up redoing some parts of the level to make them more interesting, mainly the area near the tree with the key for the fourth door.

The hardest thing to get right was the background. Originally we had one big piece but it scaled up poorly in-game and looked really blurry. We figured out a solution to break the background into little pieces and build a interesting cave structure with them.
Assets
I took a bit of a backseat in the art department this time around to focus on Unity but I managed to make the UI, consisting of the Options Menu, Loading Screen, Game Over Screen, Player Health Bar and a Health and Shield bar for the Boss.
