Welcome to Skippy, the only device you will need to clean a large body of water, dams, harbors and any navigational water ways. Made using the rotational moulding process, the product has been made keeping the theme of ‘Outdoor sports and recreation” in mind.

I first started my research by looking at the rotational moulding process, in order to understand how to design for the process; one has to understand the process.

I then continued my research by looking at the sport of sailing, looking at the ins and outs of the sport and looking at what I could possibly create or improve the sport.

After understanding the processes and the sport, I set out with ideation, creating concepts and ideating ways to either improve the sport, or create a revolutionary product. I first thought of an anti-heeling device, then an anti-turtling device or a plastic cover for the boom to protect your head should the boom hit you.

After getting feedback from numerous personas, I decided that the initial concepts was not in enough demand or simply would not work, thus I ideated again and came up with a device that could clean the dams from any plastic pollution. The Initial concept was to make an autonomous device, however not having the time or resource, I decided against that idea, thus a simple collector that could be towed behind two boats, not one as the dispersed water would push litter away, whereas two boats would collect any pollution in the middle, was the answer.

Once I had the design in my head, I developed it and refined until I felt as if it could go straight into production. Compiling stress studies, to best figure out where and how ribs could be applied, figuring out any dimensions, and creating renders to see the product in use without being made.

I also created a few mock ups to figure out any problems I faced at the time, further improving the design.

Once I figured out any problems I had, I started my prototyping process, once finished my prototype, I tested it, and it worked perfectly.

The Skippy is a successful, fully rotational mouldable product that serves the community for the better good. A long term solution to South Africa’s, if not the worlds water litter problems.
