For this project, our main objective was to develop a legible set of construction documents for a landscape design for the Orfalea College of Business at Cal Poly.  To do this, I developed a Cover Sheet, Grading Plan, Layout Plan, Construction Details Sheet, Planting Plan, and Lighting Plan through the use of AutoCAD.

 

 

For this site design, I wanted there to be an interesting and attractive paving material that is inviting for people to walk on and complements the existing architecture.  For bikers, they can park their bikes in front of Crandall Gym, rather than hauling them up the stairs in front of the Business Building.  As visitors approach the Business Building, plant material will conceal the utility enclosures so they won’t be such eye sores.  Visitors will then encounter two main areas on their way to the core of the building.  First, I designed a private area with seating where one can reflect on the history of Cal Poly and the Western United States.  The colors and materials will reflect the character and culture of Latin America and informative plaques will provide an opportunity for people to learn about the history and diversity of Cal Poly.  I proposed that this area be surrounded by Native and California Friendly plants to demonstrate the campus heritage and also provide privacy.  Beyond the private area, the main stairway was kept intact as an entry point for the Business building.  However, along the sides (where the bike racks are currently), there will be places for people to sit, study, or drink a cup of coffee.  To make the area more appealing, I added trees and umbrellas to provide relief from the bright sun.  The big idea is to create an area where people will want to hang out by encouraging moments of spontaneous interaction.
