The concept of this project was to make a colored lino-cut print using the reduction print method. I used a picture of my two sisters and I and copied it onto the linoleum using carbon paper. I used a single piece of linoleum and cut out my design using an X-acto knife and various shaped chisels. With this process you cut away certain parts as you go depending on what you want to show up in the reversal image of the print. The colors I used were light gray, black, and the white is the color of the paper itself. First I cut away the background and any part that I wanted to be just plain white, including the highlights in the hair. Next I rolled out my gray color using a brayer onto the linoleum surface, placed my paper on top of the lino-cut, and then cranked it through an old-fashioned printing press. I had to make about 30 of these because the goal in mind was to try and get at least 15 to look clean and equal. The next step was to cut away the parts in the faces and on the body that were gray because I no longer needed them. The last step was to roll the black ink on the remaining surface of the linoleum, place my paper on top, and run it through the printing press. I used the same 30 pieces of paper with the gray on them and re-rolled them through the press so that in the end I would see the design made up of values of gray, black, and white.
