DELTA DENTAL CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS

This commission is for the new Delta Dental corporate offices in Oakland, California and stretch over five floors of the interior office space. Every one of the over 6000 photographs was shot in-camera either on site at the building, or in my studio using material samples from the interior design. Adding to the mix was color extrapolation, images and forms based on the hexagon (a visual theme throughout the interior space) as well as pure abstraction and sensation.
5th floor panels. Each one measures 72"H x 38"W. The theme for these was transportation on the ground and underground. Many of the images were taken in the BART station over which the building sits.
7th floor panels. Each one measures 78"H x 42"W. The theme is the ground level outside the building. The plants are all clippings from the surrounding greenery, plus images of the pavement, the street signs and other urban indicators.
8th floor panels. Each measures 78"H x 42"W. The theme for these is architecture, structure, mathematics, geometry, systems. Views outside the windows of surrounding buildings, both contemporary and historic.
9th floor panels. Each panel measures 78"H x 36"W. The theme is looking upwards. Sky, clouds, flags, buildings, reflections in the windows as darkness falls and the fluorescent lights come on.
10th floor wall. This wall measures 104"H x 210"W. It covers the full wall of an inside meeting/lounge room. A regulated grid of hexagonal images stays in place as the images shift and change in color, form, style, material. This is an especially exhilarating wall to stand before.
Floor 10 process view. All the individual pictures are tacked up using simple push pins. Then the entire wall is rebuilt using the original digital files.

Floor 8 process view. Each panel is a slow build. they start with a set of larger anchor pictures and then grow organically as each image finds its community.
