About
Hanafuda (花札) are Japanese playing cards, popular in Korea and Japan. It has 48 cards, 12 suits of 4 cards each, each suit representing a month with a Japanese plant. They are used to play numerous games, such as Koi-Koi and Go-stop.
Task
I believe that, when you choose a design style, you must also choose its philosophy. And so the main thing I aimed for in this project was clarity. I therefore aimed to achieve three things:

1. Have a consistent aesthetic theme throughout.

2. Make sure each suit has its own aesthetic.

3. Make sure each card is instantly recognisable.

Obviously, the main aesthetic theme is Swiss design, but also with aspects of Japanese graphic design, especially its diagonal and circular compositions. In order to achieve clarity, I included the names of each plant, letting me also experiment with typographical compositions. I also made sure cards of the same type have similar designs, such as the circular compositions of the ribbon cards.
