This is a replicable housing prototype for aging in place in a multi-generational community in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A project sponsored by KaTo Architects and SCAD with the purpose of Rebuilding communities, young and old, affected by natural disasters. Environments for Aging (EFA) have partnered with KaTO and SCAD to deliver a student competition in Architecture and Interior Design disciplines, that take into account the challenges of rebuilding dwellings that both create and rebuild communities affected by the natural disasters that struck the island of Puerto Rico in 2017. For this design, we chose the Kitchen to be the heart of the residence, it is the most important space as it is the connection between the rooms and the outdoor spaces. This 1000 square foot house gives residents comfort and privacy as well as communal areas. The shape of the house is designed to expand and create bigger communities as well as sustainable strategies.
