Everyone experiences mind-wandering; it is a ubiquitous element of our cognitive processing. However, we all differ in the frequency in which the mind wanders and what about. There are similarities between this type of thinking and thinking in depression. 15,000 explores the obsessive and repetitive nature of abstraction associated with depressive thinking.
The piece is knitted out of monofilament. The material when knitted creates a gauze-like band unlike any manufactured fabrics. To highlight the obsession, the piece is one continuous knit with 15,000 rows yielding nearly 30 yards of fabric. When displayed, the piece is accompanied by a recording of the knitting machine. This monotonous sound produces an atmosphere akin to the nagging distress associated with negative thinking. To further the obsessiveness of the work, it will be displayed in many different ways, representative of the many different manifestations depression from person to person.
