SHOW OF HANDS EDITION 005 : FOOD WASTE
As one of the ten Show of Hands Edition 005 artists, I have been invited to create an artwork based on the theme Food Waste. Profits from the exhibition night went to a local charity relevant to the event's theme.
The Title of the Piece: “Arkandan ağlar!” - It will weep over you!
The medium/ materials used: Digital, collage
“Arkandan ağlar!” (It will weep over you!) is what Turkish people say to kids who don’t finish the food on their plates. Growing up in a culture where food is sacred and wasting it is associated with disrespectfulness and weeping, the image of crying has always been something that stuck with me about throwing away food since my childhood. In my artwork, the food waste problem is questioned by changing food’s role of weeping over people, to being wept over by mourning crowds integrated into the image as a collage. Also, the scale of the problem (human) and the object (food) has been interchanged in the work to emphasize the change of the roles.
