Exposing the Secrets in Food Photography

• Pancakes and waffles are often sprayed with Scotchgard so the syrup doesn't get absorbed. Syrup is often substituted with motor oil, because actual syrup doesn't photograph dark enough.

• To get that frosty look, fruit is sprayed with spray-on deodorant.

• Milk is frequently substituted with glue so things don't get soggy.

• There are several substitutes for ice-cream but, here, a combination of corn starch, conditioner, and paint were used to mimic pistachio ice-cream.

• Whipped cream doesn't keep its shape for very long so often, shaving cream is used instead!
