ART 121 Observational Drawing: Charcoal Still Life

Still Life Drawing In Charcoal
Through a fully resolved drawing,
1. Demonstrate ability to construct a dynamic compositional structure with deep space achieved
through scale, value, and degree of clarity and contrast of objects on foreground, middle
ground, and background spaces.
2. Demonstrate sensibility to construct complex value structure to communicate physical
qualities of your subject matter such as solidity, weight, texture, and local value of the
objects.
3. Demonstrate understanding of the sfumato technique to construct concrete three-
dimensional space and objects and to express a particular mood or nuance of space.
4. Demonstrate versatility to the medium used in this drawing.
5. Demonstrate strong work ethics and craftsmanship.
Final drawing: I progressed from a general structure to detail. I built loose sketches to solid forms. I avoided overuse of sharp and defined contours. I tried to pay attention how the edges of the objects work in my drawing. I gradually achieved contrast between light and dark. When moving to the final stage, I carefully observed and incorporated subtle nuances of transitional values and increased expressive contrast.
Materials: compressed black and white charcoals, soft charcoal pencils (black and white), white or
toned charcoal paper (18”x24”), kneaded eraser, blending tool, masking tape, and
sketching materials (newsprint papers, graphite pencil, sketchbook)
