A PARENT'S GUIDE TO SEX EDUCATION

When parents have educated their children about sex in an environment of openness. Studies have shown that it has enhanced children’s understanding on the subject. Further, children are likely to follow their parents’ advice and approach them in times of difficulty. It is difficult for both the parents and children, to discuss sex. Talking to their kids about sex is one of the task, many Indian parents cringe doing. They fairly assume that their kid will learn about it when the time is right by sources like media or friends. Any discussion about sex during pre-teenage / teenage years simply implies "You've lost your moral values. You need to change your circle of friends." The over bearing protective parents consider sex education as a shameful encounter.

Anything remotely related to sex is frowned upon. When I was in school, whenever the advertisements about condoms/sanitary used to come up, I didn't know how to react. Should I change the channel or act innocent and keep watching. I believe most of us must have faced these situations at home, while watching television together.

In India, sexuality education has thrown up various anxieties at most times and still remains a deeply fraught terrain. Today, with an increased outcry against sexual violence that women face, sexuality education has again come to the fore, and its importance as part of the school curriculum is being stressed.

Your relationship with your parents might help in breaking the ice. While some parents depend on the teachers to do the need, some teachers themselves depend on parents.
But I personally believe that Sex education is a major part of parenting. I wish to work on Design for Sex Education for Children in India, this info-graphic guide to Parent for Sex Education is my first step as I have seen Sex Education broadly without any cultural reference.

 I hope it helps.
