A series of illustrations showcasing common native weeds found in Ireland. These illustrations were done as part of a project looking at the relationship between our society and weeds, looking at why it is we hold such a negative stigma over weeds and how this came about.

These five illustrations were inspired by the large scale chromolithographic botanical prints designed during the Victorian era, known for their elegance and for bringing out the beauty of the plants they showcased. The illustrations were drawn in Photoshop using Kyle T. Webster's downloadable brushes.

As I come from a family of botanists and horticulturists I wanted to integrate their view somehow. I decided to include my father, who used to run a bedding plant nursery, in this project. His view of weeds was that they were a thing that got in the way more than anything else and that he didn't have much knowledge of them apart from their negative aspects.

With this in mind, I thought it might be funny to get him to name these plants and design these illustrations as if they were chromolithographic botanical prints, even using the Distiller's Press in the National College of Art and Design in Dublin (where I study) to give an authentic feel to them.
