Warped I & II

“Warped I & II” are two jacquard woven double cloth structures. These pieces explore an altered, manipulated grid. Grids can be so flat, structural and predictable. However, when altered they can take infinite forms. “Warped I & II” illustrate the photograph of a laser cut leather grid that was manipulated temporarily from its flat nature. Hence, creating volume, transforming the shapes and lines accordingly with a three dimensional shape and space. “Warped I” is a compressed version of “Warped II” before it was resized. Shadings satins were used for the positive space and shadows and a fancy twill like structure was woven in the different values in the positive space (leather grid). While the negative spaces (holes), where the light comes through, consisted of two different structures in which the top cloth stayed as floats that would later be cut to make the underneath structure visible. The cut out floats add texture and a new dimension to the weaving, transmitting a sensory experience to the viewer and referencing nature and micro structures. These also frame the negative spaces and bring attention to where the light is supposedly going through.
