BRIEF
Create a title sequence for the film Nightcrawler that sets the tone and mood for the movie and enhances the film’s narrative. Utilize a unique visual narrative technique in which the story is surrounded or framed by a secondary story or concept.
CONCEPT
The concept is to capture the protagonist's (Lou Bloom) perversion of the American dream of perfect domesticity and safety of the home. The mundane act of getting ready to go out in a domestic setting is twisted into dangerous and violent events. Bloom is a ruthless character who comes across as being cool and distant at first. Bloom's simmering rage is exposed below the hardness of his cool surface by images of glowing heat. He capitalizes on the perceived danger of inner city crime seeping into the white suburbs and leaves a trail of burnt destruction in his wake.
APPROACH
I chose a macro lens for my photography to transform ordinary objects. Critical to the process was the use of light to dramatize the mundane elements of domesticity. The breakthrough moment came during the macro exploration of the charred egg whites. Lighting it from behind allowed a transparency which added a texture that gave the sense of repulsion. The scarred cutting board for the final egg shot captured the underlying violence.
