Elements and Principles of Design

Harmony

Harmony refers to an image where all of the components and elements complement each other, and bring the composition together in a visually appealing way. The photo usually has multiple principles and elements within it, where they all work together. 
Volume
Volume refers to how much weight the subject in the image carries, and is assessed in how high,  heavy and wide the subject is.
Color
Color refers to the spectrum of radiation that the human eye can see, and how the colors participate in the photo to create a visually appealing image. The image chosen to represent color is a digitally edited photo of an eye. 
Contrast
Contrast is the scale of difference between colors in an image, with to or more colors standing out from each other. The two colors contrasting in this photo are a bright red and a dull brown. 
Emphasis
Emphasis is where a certain subject, principle or element is the main subject within the photo. The flower in this picture is emphasized, as it is the only one in focus. 
Movement
Movement is the technique of capturing action in a still image, creating visual excitement. In this photo, it is captured through the movement of water from a drinking fountain before it splashes down in the sink. 
Pattern
 Pattern refers to the repetition of elements in an even or uneven form, to produce visual excitement. The pattern on the bike wheel is even and constant, creating a visually appealing image.  
Repetition
Repetition is when any element is repeated multiple times in either a pattern or random sequences. The photo shows a repetition of  
Rhythm
The technique of repeating elements in an organized, but unsymmetrical way, creating a visually appealing image.  

Scale/ Proportion
Scale and proportion refers to how two or more subjects differ in size. The photo shows a small, medium and large rock stacked onto each other, showing how big or small each one is. 
Shape
The way subjects connect to each other in a photo forms shapes that draw the eye from subject to subject. In this photo, the shape is a heart, which has been drawn on sand across the pavement, pulling the viewers eye to the center of the photo
Space

Typography
 Typography refers to the arrangement of type. The word is Shu Feng and is a brand of bike 
Unity
 Unity refers to when each element in an image work together, creating a photo as a whole. The photo is of a girl holding two flowers in her hand, with the elements of color, contrast, scale and proportion and form working together.  

Variety
Texture refers to the feel of an object, or how something appears to feel. The photo is a close up of the trees bark, showing how it would feel to the viewer (rough and scratchy). 
line
Line draws the viewers eye through the photo, from one point to another. Lines don’t have to be straight 
Texture

Balance
Balance refers to a sense of stability in the image, or a feeling of equal weight.  There are three types of balance in photography; radial, horizontal, and vertical. 

Form
Form refers to a defined, 3D volume of space
Value
Value is the measure of difference of light to dark in an image. Te photo compares white against black
