When a horse is being ridden, one of the main sources of communication is

carried across through the saddle. The main aim of the saddle is to position the

rider correctly on the horse in order for the communication between horse and

rider to be as clear as possible. The saddle also distributes the weight of the

rider over a wider area to try and avoid high pressure spots on the horses back,

although this can still happen with the saddle on.
