This research was created to find a new and clever way for escaping a submerging modern passenger car while taking into account the current trends and moves in the automobile industry. The results showed that the topic is little analyzed and the existing help tools are not very common.
To find a new concept for escaping a submerging vehicle, different kind of researches were held – from study about automotive safety to having interviews with people who have actually been in a submerging vehicle.
The development continued with the polycarbonate airbag hatch which consisted of specific shape of polycarbonate frame and glazing, an airbag and a trigger for initiating the airbag. The main idea is that the force from the airbag breaks the glued bond between the polycarbonate frame and the cars’ window pane and releases itself from the car, creating an exit for the passengers.
This system is intended to work even if the car has submerged below the surface of the body of water. As a result of this, the system can also be used on dry ground which gives it extra possibilities of use besides car submersion accident.
