Humans, like many other animals, have a gift that allows us to predict and expect what is soon to come, or in some cases, what will happen in the long term future. We use it in things as simple as determining an opponents next move, all the way to predicting a comet’s trajectory every 76 years. This is called pattern recognition. We are so good at it that sometimes we see patterns where there are none. We see faces in nature, hear voices in radio noise, and believe in conspiracy theories. Our need for significance forces us to seek patterns in our own lives because of our innate fear of the unknown. This gift can act as both a blessing and a curse, and it is up to us to decide whether knowledge will conquer our fear.
