Prompt and sketches:
The prompt for this project was to create a vessel that would both contain and be inspired by a found object. The object I chose as my inspiration was a manikin hand. I was inspired by the slightly eerie nature of the hand and the idea of containing it. I began to research reliquaries, elaborate containers which hold religious artifacts such as pieces of saints. I also took inspiration from Gothic architecture and in particular the Gothic arch. This inspiration is apparent throughout both my sketches and the final piece.

Process:
I began by carefully creating a template with every piece perfectly fitted so that, when they were traced on the clay slabs, the sections would fit together. I also laid out the pattern for the latticework .It could be traced onto the slabs before they were assembled. The slabs were then rolled out and cut into their respective pieces. To finish, each slab was scored and put together to create the final shape. The top bulb fits like the lid of a jar onto the bottom pedestal and therefore can be taken off. This made it possible to carefully cut out the latticework without damaging the base. After the piece dried and was fired it was finished with a metallic 04 glaze.
