Hope Is the Thing with Feathers

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -

That perches in the soul -

And sings the tune without the words -

And never stops - at all-

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -

And sore must be the storm -

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm -

I've heard it in the chilliest land -

And on the strangest Sea -

Yet – never - in Extremity，

It asked a crumb - of me.

Hope Is The Thing With Feathers is an inspiring poem with positive and up lifting meanings. In the poem, bird is the representation of hope. Instead of directly adding images of birds into the design, using feathers as the key element helps demonstrating the lightness, weakness and innocence of the bird in a more implicit way; which helps in building up the contradiction between the appearance(weak and small) of the bird and its characteristic (tough and generous). So is hope.

To provide a organic feeling to the viewer, laser cut paper art and real shooting are the main techniques that are chosen for this project. The finished laser cut paper art works will be roughly bind into a book. The video will be record of the turning of the pages of the book. The typography are blended into the art works and seen as the book pages turn.
