The inspiration behind this piece was founded in bringing man-made and natural
together, organic and rectilinear. It is about fixing nature's “mistakes” while
embracing them, as demonstrated by the butterfly dovetails patching/stitching
the crack in the wood. It is a piece rich in juxtaposition and style, a perfect dining
table for someone who wants a clean simple form yet visually complex and
interesting.

The design development process was based on visual research, looking at a
variety of artists including Sergio Rodrigues and Patricia Urquiola for inspiration
and driving ideas from exhibitions like Arte Rio 2014. The combination of metal
and wood was also a factor that interested me and influenced the design. I looked
at ikea dining tables to guide my dimensions. I looked at methods to connect
the table top to the base and how welded parts could create an interesting
slightly patterned structure for the base, which would be strong but look light
weight. I went about designing and sketching thinking of companies like knoll and
eoos as brands that could be potential clients.
