The Great Barrier

THE GREAT BARRIER
The Earth’s complex coral reef ecosystem and its process of bleaching became the main inspiration for multimedia artist and creative director Jon Jacobsen, and performer and movement director Paul Zivkovich, to develop a project about the endless tension between hope and doubt in our lives titled ‘The Great Barrier’.

In 9 images, the series illustrates life and decay personified by a shapeshifting character who slowly turns into marine-esque polyps, vigorously floating in a vacuumous space. Focusing on the human body as an abstract vessel interacting with the environment.

‘The Great Barrier’ was shot in New York City and continued being developed in Jacobsen’s studio in Santiago de Chile. Using social media as a tool to communicate, both artists committed to a daily exchange, capturing images of organic materials from Jacobsen’s native homeland, Chile, and Zivkovich’s travels throughout China and Australia.
