Mookie Betts Wins Arbitration Case with Red Sox

As managing partner and head of capital markets for New York's Laidlaw & Company, James "Jimmy" Ahern has facilitated more than $2 billion in transactions for private and public companies in the healthcare sector. Outside of his work with Laidlaw, James "Jim" Ahern enjoys following his favorite Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Boston Red Sox.

Although his batting average dropped from .318 to .264 in 2017, Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts had another productive season. The former fifth-round pick and Nashville, Tennessee native hit 24 home runs and recorded 102 runs batted in (RBI), while also stealing 26 bases and drawing 77 walks. He was named to the American League All-Star team for the second consecutive season, won his second consecutive Gold Glove, and finished sixth in MVP voting. As such, the pending free agent set lofty contract demands which the Red Sox were not prepared to meet in the offseason. Consequently, the two sides were forced to go to arbitration.

The arbitration hearing took place on January 31 and involved both parties arguing their case to a three-person panel, which is responsible for siding with either the player or the team. Betts filed for $10.5 million for the 2018 season and the Red Sox countered with an offer of $7.5 million. The panel sided with Betts, who is now signed to the second-highest contract among first-year arbitration eligible players in MLB history behind Kris Bryant, who agreed to a $10.85 million deal with the Chicago Cubs earlier in the offseason.
