Pleats & Space | Installation design & Photography

In order to achieve the visualization of “the relationship between neglected subtle units and the environment”, I take a large amount of photography works which all focus on the topic of neglected space corners. As a part of the instalment, the folding space is spread which implies its similarity with spreading fold and achieves the visualization of the theme. My primary source of inspiration comes from the "pleats please" series of Issey Miyake as its combination of plane figures and solid form interests me a lot. The fold itself has both philosophical and spatial meanings. Gilles Deleuze’s theory of ‘the fold’ has updated public’s cognition towards philosophy of art that the world and objects are formed by smaller and smaller folds while the difference only occurs during the changing, bifurcation and deformation process. In addition, its compositional principle, aesthetics and texture principles, materials, functions and even itself could become the carrier of emotional meanings.  It can be powerful and can hide massive information. Like the folding fans, you can learn about all hidden and ignored contents when you open it. Combining this with my photography works, my project applies the concept of fold in the visualization process of neglected subtle units through space reduction and fold spreading. I wish my project can call for people’s attention to these existing and valuable but still ignored corners and increase public’s awareness and sensitiveness towards life.
