through weaving, knitting, sewing, and natural dyeing processes, I created unique objects and textile collections that capture the emotional aesthetics of storms and chaos. working with these meditative hand processes was a personal retreat from the chaos of 2017. the process of making represents creating a calm inside the storm by embracing sudden changes as opportunities for growth and evolution.

theory
chaos is defined as ‘disorder, confusion, and the unformed primal state of the universe’ and most people think of chaos as the opposite of order. however, most complex systems arise from the mutual interaction between chaos and order, through something called bifurcation. bifurcation is defined as ‘abrupt change of form under continuous underlying transformation’. for example, a wave breaking or a bubble popping involves bifurcations, as well as catastrophic natural events, such as cyclones, floods, and earthquakes. some complex systems bifurcate between chaos and order over time, resulting in a transition region between chaos and order. this mixing area is known as ‘the edge of chaos’, where complex evolving structures can develop. therefore nature and evolution are both complex systems evolving at the edge of chaos. to me, the idea that life evolves at the ‘edge of chaos’ represents the personal growth and evolution that follows abrupt and unpredictable changes.
