OFF THE WALL

Something off the wall is something outside the box, with attitude, eccentricity and outlandishness that doesn’t fit conventional standards.
Off the Wall is also the title of an exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum of New York (which was later presented at Serralves), which gathered the work of a group of artists who redefined the concept of art and the protocols of its public presentation, in the 70s, by refusing to expose their work on the walls of galleries, contradicting the idea that art is only presented as painting or sculpture. They explored different forms of creation based on the idea of performance e transporting them to the public space.
The public space, with its innumerous possibilities of appropriation and renewal, is one of the territories of environmental design intervention where the idea of space and time converge. Being a dynamic area, the solutions of a certain project are several times subject to adaptations and appropriations by their users, who end up giving place to unforeseen uses, or even completely changing the meaning of the function for which the original project was developed.
