Smithsonian Books publishes a select list of trade nonfiction and illustrated books. Our
publishing program covers categories where the Smithsonian’s authority is unparalleled, such as history; science and technology; space, aviation, and military; art; and signature illustrated books, as well as works based on museums, collections, and artifacts.

This series was for North American wildlife guide which included mammals, wildflowers, and pine trees. The target audience would have been for people interested in illustrated images for their exploration of North America. The end result was a full book jacket for the all three books. 

The thematic treatment was all flat illustrations designed with Native American designs in the borders and other objects. Each series had a color theme relating back to the topic of choice. For example the pine tree cover uses browns to transmit the colors of tree trunks. Each cover had a circle in the center with the main illustration breaking out of it while the back cover had an environmental perspective.
