Oceania 3 - Final Pieces

Oceania
June 2006
The final stage of this project consisted of an exhibition in which to display my work. Whilst producing my samples I felt that that had a wide range of uses, be it for fashion or interiors. I therefore didn't want to create a product thus depicting the fabrics final use. One of my initial ideas was to create a garment out of a montage of samples on the wall. This idea was used for a series of photographs taken for the exhibition catalogue. Having discussed the exhibition with my tutor I came up with the idea of the production of a paper garment and two skirts. They will each be produced as the front half of the garment and displayed on the wall as if they were pieces of fabric. I have shown them below on the mannequin thus giving the illusion that I have created an actual garment.
Constructed from paper this garment consists of a gathered crepe paper corset, and a mulberry paper skirt and belt all of which have been dyed and beaded.

This skirt was created by tying coins in the top half of a piece of silk haboti, thus creating a band of circles. The fabric was then dyed using coffee and dried in the oven to heat set the fabric. The coins were removed and the circles embelished with beads and sequins.

This skirt was created by sandwiching random layers of ice wool between two skirt panels of silk haboti. It was then free machine stitched before being dyed with red onion skins.
