CFDA Fall/Winter 18 Collection: Disjointed Art
For this collection I was inspired by the disjointed figures and shapes I saw in a number of paintings. The colors, behind everything else, is also what lead me to be inspired by these art pieces. I decided to do a fall/winter collection for 2018 instead of summer because many people try to avoid color during winter, but I wanted to show that it is still possible and actually fashionable. For this this collection I used mostly knits with a few light weights since it is a winter collection. Because of the fact that I used both light weights and knits, I wanted to play with layering to ensure that the customer could stay warm. A few of the knits I used consisted of a wool blended novelty knit, chunky wool sweater knit, and a tweed knit wool. Some of the light weights consisted of a tissue weight cotton poplin, wrinkled cotton poplin, and silk-cotton dual satin. Looking at the images I chose for my concept the colors that immediately jump out are the primary colors. I didn't want to do a typical primary color, color palette. So, instead of a regular red or blue, I decided to find deeper tones along with lighter tones to compliment those deep tones. My color pallet consists of paintless white, creative green, acrylic orange, wet brush blue, jet black, inspired pink, brush blue, and dried paint red. My silhouettes were inspired by the shapes caused by the disjointed figures. Many of the images from my concept also had many layering that contributed to shapes, so I incorporated a lot of layering as well. One piece that fits this extremely well is my look 8 with the chunky wool sweater knit top and doubled bottoms (blended shirting and cotton french terry). The top has different strips of elastic in the sleeves causing it to bunch in and out, and the pants are layered, one long and the other short. Majority of my surface elements come from the textures of the fabrics I chose like the wool blended novelty knit and from the three original print designs I created (paint brush, linear, and confused). The customer I envision wearing my collection is a young (25-35yr old) artistic female. She is a freelance artist that makes sculptures for different companies/parks. She’s the kind of women that won’t let other people define her and likes to take risks, especially with her wardrobe. She lives somewhere where it gets cold during winter, but not below 0. She likes to shop at local boutiques to find new/unique pieces to add to her wardrobe. The general price point for this collection would fit under the “bridge” category.
